How to Get Away with Murder: Season 1 Review

I had extremely low expectations for this show when I first started watching it. I normally never watch network TV shows (other than NBC’s amazing Hannibal). I just feel like, why waste my time on something that can’t really push the envelope the way HBO and Showtime television can?
Well, fortunately Shonda Rhime’s latest production (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal), How to Get Away with Murder surpassed my expectations. The first couple episodes I wasn’t thrilled with, but as the season went on and the characters and plot developed things became really interesting. HTGAWM doesn’t reinvent the wheel or anything, but it is thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable.

Just because.

The best thing about the show is of course Viola Davis. She is a great actress and it is wonderful to see her finally have a role worthy of her talents. Annalise Keating is quite a complicated character. She doesn’t always make sense or seem very human. But Viola’s portrayal gives her dimensions that make Annalise both admirable, horrifying, and worthy of pity. I’ll be very surprised if she doesn’t get away with an Emmy this fall (see what I did there? ;))

More Asher love.

HTGAWM is kind of guilty pleasure viewing. It reminds me of a late night, scandalous soap opera. Some of the plot points and characters are over the top, but if you throw logic out the window the show is quite fun. Some of the twists and turns are genuinely shocking (that finale!), so it is always fun to discuss the next day. At first the characters all seemed quite shallow and stereotypical (well other than Annalise). For a while I couldn’t really differentiate the students from one another. But it was really fun to see them all blossom in their own unique ways. At first Connor (Jack Falahee) was my favorite. And while I still like him he has been surpassed by the wonderful, pathetic, hilarious Asher (Matt McGorry). Asher has so many quote worthy and gif worthy moments that I can’t mention them all here. But he is truly something special (take that however you want). Laurel (Karla Souza) was very annoying and boring at first. But it gradually became apparent that she is actually the most intelligent of all the students. Although she did sleep with Frank (Charlie Weber) … And Frank! Well he was also quite boring until maybe the last 5 minutes of the finale. I think he’ll become a lot more interesting next season. It is kind of ironic, but Wes (Alfred Enoch), the most important of all the students, the most important character after Annalise, is as boring and dull as he was at the beginning. I think it is partly the fault of the actor not being good or charismatic. But Wes has always been written as a bit of a clean slate, someone the audience can project themselves into.

Who dunnit this time?

The highlight of the entire season had nothing to do with Annalise or the students. It all came down to Mama (Cicely Tyson). Wow, what a scene stealer! She was so hilarious and fun to watch. Cicely is the perfect person to play Annalise’s mother. Hopefully she’ll be back next season!
How to Get Away with Murder ended up being very fun to watch this winter. Hopefully next season will be just as fun. Rating for Season 1: 7.5/10

So let’s speculate, who killed Rebecca? My money is on Laurel at this point.

How to Get Away with Murder: Episode 10; Hello Raskolnikov

Apparently the second half of the season calls for a new wig.

HTGAWM is back!!! This show is like my soap opera, guilty pleasure whereas Deadwood is my Shakespeare. Anyways I have to say this episode was kind of boring. Not much happened, and what did happen was pretty predictable. The best part is simply the title of the episode (I love Crime and Punishment references!) Well, and Viola Davis who as always delivers a solid performance, continuing to flesh out Annalise Keating. Although I’m still not convinced that Sam murdered Lila, but all signs point to that. I did not like the big reveal at the end that his sister is in town. I feel like it was supposed to be a really shocking and exciting reveal. She’s played by some actress whose face is really familiar, but I don’t even know her name or from where…. Marcia Gay Harden, that’s her name!!! (Praise IMDB!) She’s been in a ton of stuff. Anyways her character doesn’t interest me at all. This week’s episode gets 2 out of 5 immaculate wigs.
Tidbits:
• The episode begins with Annalise putting on her game face i.e. her make-up and wig.
• Annalise tells Wes in a brief flashback “What you did tonight had to be done.” Yes, Sam had to be killed because he was a fucking boring character.
• By covering up the murder Annalise is trying to help herself, not the kids. I’m still not convinced that she had nothing to do with Lila’s murder.
• Laurel: “You had a girlfriend you didn’t tell me about, Frank.”
Frank: “A long distance girlfriend.” Because that makes lying okay!
• The case of the week was: In order to get the charges against Rebecca dropped they have to prove that Sam killed Lila. Well, that he probably did anyways.
• Waaaaiiiittt I thought Bonnie and Annalise had a huge fight and that Bonnie got fired??? And now everything is a-okay??? WTF???
• The students are all getting paranoid that they are going to get caught.
• Sam you are (were?) the father!!!
• Bonnie says she was ‘desperate’ when she slept with Asher. Harsh.
• Lila didn’t want an abortion, so Sam killed her. Probably.
• Frank is super pissed at Laurel, but no one has any idea why.
• Sam was at the sorority when Lila was killed. So he probably did it. Probably. The charges against Rebecca get dropped.
• “She’s not a person like the rest of us,” Annalise overhears some bitch woman say in the bathroom. Annalise just comes out of the cubicle, washes her hands, and leaves. So much more satisfying than if she had told her off.
• Laurel, Conner, and Michaela are going to turn themselves in to the police. But Wes and Annalise turn up just in time since Laurel tips them off. Annalise saves the day!
• Their exam is basically their situation lol.
• Sam’s sister is in town. *Yawn*

How to Get Away with Murder: Episode 9; Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me.

Ding Dong the Dick is dead.

So I finally got around to watching the winter finale of HTGAWM (it takes me a full 30 seconds to type that). Nearly two weeks late, but I recently started a new job, so I’m a little behind on blogging.
Anyways this ended up being a pretty good episode. Although it didn’t start out that way. The crime this week is Sam’s murder.The first three thirds were pretty easy to see coming as most of it had already been alluded to in past episodes. I was starting to hate Annalise and her pathetic need/love of Sam (Tom Verica), her a**hole husband. And then near the very end of the episode as Wes says to Sam’s body “I’m so sorry” Annalise utters the words “Don’t be.” And I was excited and enamored with the show again. Annalise’s pathetic, sappy voice mail to her husband was just an act! She’s actually glad he is dead (as is the audience). Hopefully for the rest of the season (which doesn’t air again until the end of January) will see more of the strong Annalise than the weak one.

Kill me, kill me, kill me.

Tidbits:
• The fight between Annalise and Sam at the beginning of the episode was pretty juicy! I’m glad they got all that out before Sam dies. It was satisfying to hear Annalise tell Sam about her affair with Nate. And Sam finally told the truth. Great scene from both actors.
• I’m still not totally convinced Sam is the one that killed Lila. He never actually admitted to it. Maybe Annalise did it…
• “You want the truth? You’re nothing but a piece of ass, that’s what I saw…That’s all you’re good for, dirty, rough sex, you disgusting slut.” Whoa Sam, you married someone that you found that repulsive?

Wes may have dealt the final blow, but everyone (excluding Asher, finally it’s good to be the outcast!) is implicated.

• I was right, Wes kills Sam to protect Rebecca.
• “I’m like the most grown up grown up ever compared to your dumb asses.” Said like a true grown up with face paint on Asher.
• Asher’s pissed that his trophy got stolen then he says “Screw it” and parties it up. He knows how to live in the present.
• Annalise and Cop Boy Toy Nate have hot sex. This is a great improvement over Sam. Although it would be nice if Annalise could find a guy that’s single for once.
• Bonnie is making out with some old dude in order to forget about being fired. But then she’s like fuck it, I want some young dick, and calls up Asher. Bravo Bonnie!
• The Bonnie/Asher sex scene is very funny. “Just come here you idiot.” I feel bad for Asher though. He doesn’t seem to realize that he’s being used.

Well, Frodo still has the ring on at this point. (I think Michaela is more of a Gollum though).

• “Enough about the ring, Frodo.” Connor to Michaela who was dumb enough to lose her engagement ring the night she is involved in a murder. This girl is so dumb, how can she even attend law school? They’ll all get caught just because of that ring.
• Frank’s girlfriend broke up with him. Tell someone who cares. And actually, why did she break up with him now if he has had a long string of affairs that she knew about?
• Oliver is kind of cute without the glasses.
• I was hoping Connor could fix things with Oliver. But he just fucks them up even more.
• Annalise emerges without her hair and make-up done in front of everyone. That must have been a shocker for the students.
• Annalise believes Sam has ‘fled.’
• Annalise turns out to be one of TVs great sociopaths.

Season rating so far: 8/10

I don’t normally watch this kind of TV show (I’m more an HBO/Showtime kind of girl), but I really enjoy How to Get Away With Murder. Yes, it is a little ridiculous at times and not very realistic. But it’s enjoyable. It keeps me guessing and intrigued. I think it must be very difficult to write a compelling TV show. This one has succeeded so far in keeping my interest. But I do wish some of the characters were developed more, especially Annalise. Hopefully the rest of the season is just as captivating.

Season MVP so far: Viola Davis, who else? This woman has given a flawless performance all season. Give her all the Emmys and Golden Globes already.

How to Get Away with Murder: Episode 8; He Has a Wife.

This episode had a lot going on, but I’m not sure how much of it was really anything new. There are flashbacks to Lila (Megan West) when she was alive and dating Mr. Darcy. I was glad to finally see her since it has been hard to feel bad about her murder without knowing anything about her. But her scenes are all that interesting. It is mostly information that the audience has already heard from Sam and Rebecca. Lila would have been more interesting about 5 episodes ago. Rebecca is also made more likeable by her scenes with Lila. Although I find it funny that they had their girl talks while snorting coke. The show is just so nonchalant about it, I find it kind of strange. Anyways, this was an okay episode, not the best, but not the worst either.
Tidbits:
• Laurel’s (Karla Souza) facial expression never changes. It doesn’t matter whether she is happy or sad. She always looks pissed off. She’s the Kristen Stewart of the show, I guess.
• “Anyone else feel like we do all her work for her?” Michaela talking about Bonnie (Liza Weil). Finally, someone says what everyone else has been thinking for weeks now.
• Asher yet again dances and acts like a fool. Pure awesomeness.
• Why the hell does Connor want to study with Wes and Kristen Stewart (formerly known as Laurel or Bitch Face)? Normally the only one who cares about exams is Michaela. Although I enjoy how he bans her from the group.
• So I guess Wes has stronger feelings for Rebecca than for Annalise. Huh. How romantic (*puke*)
• Yet again, how can Cop Boy Toy do anything? He himself says he lost his job!
• Sam is being a dick to Rebecca (no surprise there). Maybe Wes killed Sam to protect her?
• “Are you good for anything or can you only do your job when you’re screwing evidence out of someone?” Annalise to Connor. Harsh but…true?
• The way Annalise bitches out Bonnie is frightening; “your pathetic. Mousy presence”. I don’t like Bonnie, but even I wanted to give her a hug. Damn. In reality, Annalise is more pathetic than Bonnie for staying with that SOB of a husband.
• Laurel and Guy Whose Name I Forget fucking is not hot no matter how much groovy music plays in the background.
• Laurel moaning…eww!
• Asher tells Bonnie that Annalise shouldn’t have bitched her out. Finally something happens between these two to establish some kind of relationship.
• “This is what I get. This is what happens when you screw somebody else’s husband. You become sad, barren. Even a dead girl is more of a woman than you.” Annalise’s little speech broke my heart. I feel for her, but it’s not easy when she is such a bitch.
• Lila: “Bad things happen when you have sex.” Umm, yeah, when it’s with someone else’s husband…and/or without a condom.
• “See what happens when you use your brain instead of your penis?” Michaela finally gets in a dig on Connor.
• Annalise can relate to her Client of the Week because they both have d-bag husbands. “You’ll thank me one day.” Maybe Annalise could learn something.
o Yeah, no, she definitely doesn’t learn anything.
• Michaela’s Monster in Law is evil, but really fun to watch.
• K-Stew to Frank (I remembered his name): “Hurry, I have a study group.” What is this, high school?
• Frank has a sexy girlfriend hahahahahahaha. K-Stew is just “the student of the month.” His girlfriend is so hot why would he cheat on her with Bitch Face?
• Sam is so annoying, I can’t wait for him to die already. He isn’t even hot!
• Sam proceeds to kiss Bonnie. He is a master manipulator. Why do these women want him? As I said, he’s not hot!

Bye Bye Bonnie (Liza Weil)

• “He’s not a good man, Annalise.” Bonnie tells Annalise her husband is a d-bag. Annalise kicks Bonnie out instead of her scumbag husband. Why?!?!?! Is he really good in bed??? I don’t understand it. Doesn’t matter since he dies in a week.

Seriously, there is nothing appealing about this man physically or mentally.

How to Get Away with Murder: Episode 7; He Deserved to Die.

“Voodoo penis.” One of few highlights this episode. Okay, I’ve been pretty slow with my HTGAWM (WTF????) recaps these days. But at least I’m getting this one up before tonight’s new episode! Okay, last week’s episode was pretty boring, one of the worst ones to me. It seemed like nothing happened until the revelation at the very end. I think this episode was boring because it’s the ‘Rebecca’ episode. And she is extremely unlikeable and annoying. I agree with Annalise when she calls Rebecca a ‘terrorist.’ This episode she holds everything interesting about the show hostage.
Tidbits:
• Did Rebecca kill Sam? She says she did it and her story makes sense but… I think she might be taking the fall for Wes. I could see him killing Sam in order to avenge Annalise and protect Rebecca. I think that would be more interesting anyways.
• Asher (Matt McGorry) is my new favorite character, sorry Connor. He just has all the funny lines these days. “Play on playa.”
• Annalise reveals that she had a series of miscarriages previously. There’s some heavy handed fore-shadowing for you.
• I love how Asher hugs the trophy to him during class.
• “You forgot his name and he’s still into you? What, do you have some sort of voodoo penis?” hahahaha, Asher, you so funny. I also love how he admires Connor and his skills, “I’m so mad I wasn’t born gay.”
• How can Annalise’s Cop Boy Toy still get her any information? I thought he was fired or demoted or something.
• “This works on women as well as men.” You can say that again Connor (Jack Falahee).
• “Hey, uh, there seems to be a problem with my phone…your number’s not in it.” Asher’s pick up line.
• “She said leave.” At this point Bonnie is not showing any favoritism or interest in Asher… so how the hell do they end up screwing?!
• The bitching between Annalise and that other female lawyer was pretty funny.

Wes (Alfred Enoch) and Rebecca (Katie Findlay).

• Rebecca and Wes finally have sex. That’s nice and all, but I’m still waiting for Annalise to pounce on him.
• The Wes/Rebecca sex scene is contrasted with Lila’s second autopsy…eww, way to kill the mood!!!

Yeah, Oliver is one lucky bastard.

• Connor goes to give Oliver flowers, but some big, sexy guy answers the door instead. Nerdy Oliver gets all the hot guys!!
• Laurel admits feelings for Bearded Dude Whose Name I Forget. They also finally get it on.
• Cop Boy Toy and Rebecca align against Sam.
• Of course Ice Queen (Bonnie) interrupts Sam and Annalise potentially getting it on. She must stand at the door with her ear to the key hole.
• Lila was pregnant! And it can’t be by her chaste, Christian boyfriend who had taken a vow of silence…. It was you Sam!! Shocker!! (Not really, but whatev)
• Sam is a dirt bag, but Annalise will never break up with him. Hard to like her when she consistently lets him walk all over her.

How to Get Away with Murder: Episode 6; Freakin’ Whack-A-Mole.

This was a good episode, although not the most exciting. If last week was the Laurel episode, this week was the Asher episode. Of all the students Asher (Matt McGorry) has stood out the least. This episode fleshes him out, but at the end of the day he is still a boring character. Although he can dance quite well (and hilariously).

A highlight of the episode for me was the scene in which Annalise tells Sam,“I need you. Don’t you get that?” I like how gradually the show has shown how truly vulnerable and weak Annalise is. Her attitude in the court room and in her public life is a drastic contrast to how she feels on the inside. She has such low self-esteem that she clings to a cheater face husband who may also be a murderer. You can tell in this scene, and it’s because of Viola’s acting, that she hates herself for this weakness. It will be interesting to see how she falls apart when Sam is dead.
Tidbits:
• “You’re disgusting. You disgust me!” Wes to Annalise. The look on her face is like her whole world has fallen apart. And I guess it has since no one seems to like her anymore.
• “La-la-la-loser.” Asher made a funny. Haha.
• “The justice system doesn’t always reward the ones that tell the truth, but the ones with the power to make their own.” Sad, but true.
• “’Cause when I filed the petition I didn’t know you were screwing some white whore!” Annalise telling it like it is. When is she really going to crack? We’re getting close. After Sam’s murdered?
• Does Ice Queen aka Bonnie (Liza Weil) always eavesdrop on Annalise and Sam? Methinks she does.

• Speaking of Bonnie she tells Sam “It’s for Annalise. I’d do anything for her.” Bitch, please! If you mean you would screw her husband for her, then yes. Otherwise STFU.
• Wet, half naked Wes answers the door when Annalise comes a knockin’. When are they going to take care of this sexual tension?!
• Annalise tells Wes, “We missed you in class.” By ‘we’ you mean ‘me,’ right, Annalise?
• I like how everyone knows Wes is the teacher’s pet. The kids probably have a betting pool on when Wes and Annalise are going to bone.
• “Wow, someone have daddy issues?” “Someone have a gay fiancé?” Hahaha, I love this little squabble between Michaela and Connor. When are they really going to have it out? My money’s on Connor, by the way.
• Ice Queen tells Laurel to back off of Frank and quit leading him on. And maybe IQ should stop leering at Sam 24/7.
• “You tapping that ass, or what?” Connor to Wes about Rebecca. I love Connor.
• Asher freaks out at everyone, runs towards them, and ends up tripping over a bunch of boxes. Hilarious. I have to agree with Connor when he says, “That’s the best thing I’ve seen in days.”
• I love how hard Annalise goes after that Senator. It gave me goose bumps.
• Annalise’s client gets released pretty quickly. Definitely not how that would go down in the real world.

Annalise is trying to protect both Sam and Rebecca (and therefore Wes).

• Annalise is setting up Lila’s boyfriend for her murder. It’s her way of proving to Wes that she can protect both Sam and Rebecca. But her Boy Toy Cop knows what she’s up to.
• Asher and Bonnie are sleeping together? Whaaaat?????? That came out of nowhere! She is such a hypocrite. Bonnie always rags on Frank for sleeping with the students when she’s as much of a dog as he is. She is quickly becoming my most hated character on this show. I think she may be the true villain on this show, possibly killing Lila because she was jealous of her fling with Sam.

How to Get Away with Murder: Episode 5; We’re Not Friends

This episode might as well be called the Laurel episode. She is the student most involved with the case they are defending and her relationship with Frank is explained a little more. But not much more. I thought for sure we were going to see them bone, but nope. Although they do at some point apparently. I find Frank pretty annoying, so I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much. I like Laurel (Karla Souza) a little better now, but she still has constant bitch face.
Tidbits:
• Did Laurel kill Sam? I think she said something about being a murderer. I don’t know, I’m still so confused.
• Annalise calls Laurel out on being a show off. Haha.
• So Sam did have an affair with Lila.

Sam is is just sitting there, probably thinking “Wanna see my dick(pic)?”

• “Then why did you lie to me?” Viola’s acting in her scene with Sam is excellent. Give this woman all the awards. She is so convincing. In that moment she’s almost animalistic in her anger. Her voice is raw with pain.
• Sam cheated on his first wife with Annalise. Once a cheater, always a cheater, I guess. I do feel sorry for Annalise, mostly because Viola is amazing. But this information paired with the fact that Annalise has cheated on Sam should make her unlikeable. I think it’s a testament to Viola’s charisma that the audience can forget something like that.
• I love watching Viola command a court room. Especially in the scene where she appeals to the jury’s emotions. I would have voted her way.
• Why won’t Laurel turn her phone off when they are getting rid of Sam’s body? Once I can understand, but twice? Is she that stupid?
• Annalise’s death stare aimed at Bonnie aka Ice Queen. Scary. But why wouldn’t Annalise fire her? Obviously Bonnie isn’t that loyal to her.
• Maybe Connor really is a sex addict if he’s looking at dick pics in the court room.
• The bickering among the students is quite funny.
• “Sexting pays off.” Haha, Connor strikes again!
• “Let it rain, hairy guy, let it rain.” Asher finally says something noteworthy and hilarious.
• “Bitch, please.” Bonnie to Frank. It was hilarious sinve it came out of nowhere.
• Finally some straight sex! I don’t mind the gay sex, but there’s been a lot of it lately. Laurel sexually attacks her boyfriend since she can’t hop on Frank (yet).
• Rebecca says Lila left her phone at Rebecca’s the night before she died because she was “done dealing.” Even if you no longer want to be a drug dealer, why would you leave your phone behind? How does that make sense? Rebecca is definitely lying.

How to Get Away with Murder: Episode 4; Let’s Get to Scooping

This episode was pretty good. Not my favorite, but good. I liked that Connor (Jack Falahee) was the focus for a lot of it. The audience is beginning to see a few more sides of him. He is a player, but he still has a heart. I actually kind of like Connor’s boy toy, Oliver, naïve as he is. It was sad to see his heart get broken. But I guess he should have known Connor is a player. I think it broke Connor’s heart a little too. Good acting on both their parts. I also liked the guilt Connor shows/feels over Paxton’s suicide (Which was abrupt and kind of lame to me). These two events, coupled with Sam’s murder, bring on Connor’s breakdown that is briefly shown when he goes to Oliver after the murder. Poor Connor. He’s a large part of why I like this show.

And that last scene with Annalise, wow. It was so powerful and yes kind of shocking. In that scene Annalise peels off her wig and wipes away her make-up, showing the audience who she truly is for the first time. I really like that she chose to confront Sam looking like that. I also love how she abruptly says to him “Sam, why is your penis on a dead girl’s phone?” I was shocked! I laughed. I really was not expecting that, but Annalise is always quite blunt. That moment is an all-time highlight for me on any television show. I loved it. And the fall out next week looks like it will be quite juicy.
Tidbits:
• So Rebecca didn’t kill Sam? I am so confused by all that flash forward stuff. Did Michaela do it? She’s the one falling apart the most.
• I like that, for the most part, the show encourages women to be powerful and assertive. This is, of course, best shown in Annalise (despite some of her flaws). I found the scene in which Annalise talks to Rebecca about her case to be quite good. Annalise encourages Rebecca to be heard and define herself, not to let anyone else define her based on their misconceptions.
• Ms. Trudeau, the woman Annalise had to defend this episode was very entertaining. She was funny, but a little crass.
• “You don’t wanna hear about my pussies.” Hahahaha.
• “If (Sam) were my husband I’d never be able to walk straight again.”
• Bitchy Blonde, Bonnie, is either having an affair with Sam or plain old stalking him. I’m guessing it’s the latter.
• Good on the show for the way they depict gay sex and homosexual relationships. It doesn’t seem all that different from the way heterosexual sex is shown all over the media.
• Paxton thinks he can get one over on Connor, but no one plays Connor!
• Bonnie is taking Sam’s side over Annalise? That’s cold. Henceforth she shall be known as the Ice Queen.
• WTF was the window open the whole time? Paxton decides to kill himself in a split second. The whole thing seemed a little ridiculous. But it does show that people should be more aware of the things they say, even in the heat of the moment.
• I love the scene where Annalise plays “detective” with Trudeau’s employees. It was fun, fast paced, and funny.
• The Ice Queen got Rebecca’s interrogation tape. Is she trying to make up to Annalise for what she did behind her back?
• Wes and Annalise just keep getting closer and closer. “It’s important to [Rebecca] and to me.” Ooh, when is Annalise gonna pounce?

How to Get Away with Murder: Episode 3; Smile, or Go to Jail.

This was a good episode. The best one so far in my opinion. It is due to a combination of 2 things. 1) There was a whole lot less flashing back and forth. It mostly stuck to just one time. Which was good because it gave the show time to breathe and 2) the characters were given time to develop. The students have started to become a little more 3 dimensional. But that doesn’t change the fact that the only likeable one is Conner (Jack Falahee). He is hilarious and adds some much needed humor to the show.

• The second they left the police station three cop cars pull up and arrest Elena for bombing somewhere 20 years before. WTF I had to laugh, it came out of nowhere, like a piano falling from the sky. This show is absurd sometimes.
• “So I guess we have more in common than I thought.” I love how Conner kept bugging Michaela (Aja Naomi King). She deserves to be knocked down a couple pegs.

Is it really that easy to fake being a lawyer and get in to talk to a murder suspect that you in no way actually represent?

• I can’t decide if Wes is incredibly stupid or if he’s a genius.
• Laurel (Karla Souza) is the character I hate the most on the show. She has constant bitch face and is definitely the dumbest student. I hope she sleeps with Frank and gets it over with already.
• Rebecca is also quite stupid. She keeps screwing herself over. I’m not convinced of her innocence though.
• Did Nate just lie to Annalise about Sam’s alibi? I think that just happened. What is Nate up to?
• The absurdity of Elena and Gabriel immediately running away together. That would not happen in the real world. They would not have left Gabriel go immediately after he gave his testimony. How dumb do they think the audience is?
• The shock of Annalise taking Rebecca’s case. I thought she didn’t care whether someone was innocent or not? I guess like Sam said, she just likes a challenge. It’s a good way to make Annalise likeable and give her a heart.

• Wow, Viola Davis is fit, beautiful, and stylish. I’m kind of jealous.

How to Get Away with Murder: Season 1, Episode 2; It’s All Her Fault

So I’m still watching this show although it is very uneven. Basically everything Viola Davis does is great and makes the show worth watching. But everything else is quite bad and makes me want to turn the TV off. This show has such a great thing going with Viola, they really don’t need anything else to make it interesting. But instead they’ve added in a bunch of annoying, forgettable students and two different, confusing “Who dunnit?” murder plots.

This scene was just ridiculous.

The show is a little silly and not very believable. This can kind of be excused when Viola is around and things are going well. But at other times the silliness is distracting and laughable for all the wrong reasons. The whole scenario where they reenact the murder of the case they are handling on the blood stained bed just struck me as ridiculous. That would never happen in the real world. And oh, look for any evidence we might have missed while we walk around completely contaminating the crime scene. And Wes is such a naïve character, he’s almost stupid. His Goth Girl neighbor comes up with a completely lame excuse to use his shower and all he does is stand there, totally dumbfounded.

The one thing I like about the students is how they have to help Annalise build her defense for whatever the week’s case is. The students are willing to do pretty much anything to try to score brownie points and it is quite funny. It kind of reminds me of House a bit. But House was a lot better and the character was likeable. I like Viola as an actress and Annalise is interesting, but she’s very difficult to like.
The jumping back in forth in time thing is so annoying I want to throw the remote at the TV every time. It’s unclear almost all of the time when exactly something is taking place. It just makes me scratch my head. There is just too much going on with this show. Focusing on just one timeline, and maybe foreshadowing events to come, would have been so much better. Less confusing and more engaging.
Tidbits:
• “Do you really know who anyone is?” Annalise’s little speech to her class at the beginning of the episode was interesting. It’s a theme that’s prevalent across all kinds of media these days (like Gone Girl).
• Viola Davis’s acting this episode is excellent. That scene where Nate (Billy Brown) breaks up with Annalise was particularly good. We see Annalise’s cold exterior start to crap and she’s shown to not be as invincible as she would like to be.
• Is Bonnie having an affair with Sam?
• The student who thinks Frank has the hots for her, Laurel, is so irritating. She has constant bitch face.
• “Well it’s happened before!” Annalise is starting to lose it a bit. She’s shown to be growing paranoid this episode as she thinks her husband had an affair with a student of his and possibly killed her too. I also loved the scene where she implores Nate to look into it.

Connor (Jack Falahee) the only almost likeable character on the show.

• “You’re too old to be a twink.” Hahaha, Connor is funny, he’s the only student that I like (but just a little bit).
• Did Annalise kill her husband, Sam, and the kids are covering it up for her? Is that what’s going on in those stupid time jumping scenes?
• Or did Goth Girl (Rebecca) kill Sam? So she and Wes are together in the future?! What the heck is going on with this show?!?!
